Funded by PEEK/Welcome Trust Fund.

AIM: To strengthen health care systems in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) through the development and validation of a hypothesisdriven, agile service improvement methodology that allows local eye health system leaders to conduct high-quality, hypothesis-led studies within their programmes.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Apply continuous improvement techniques to health systems using Peek alongside an operating framework which allows ethical, locally-led development.
  2. Implement within programmes in Kenya, Botswana and Nepal and test a sequence of hypotheses.
  3. Use the results to inform a generalised, scalable implementation of the tools and framework to be deployed at scale.

OUTPUTS:

  1. Tools & methodologies that leave nobody behind.
  2. Skills and knowledge built up in the eye care programme providers and the collaborators.

COLLABORATORS:

  1. ICEH @ LSHTM.
  2. KENYA MOH / COECSA.
  3. UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA
  4. NEPAL NETRA JYOTI SANGH
  5. PEEK VISION

PROJECT PURPOSE:

All people have health problems prevented or treated by accessing the services they need. In any given region, service providers know the specific groups of people least likely to get good care and have tools to understand their barriers and what could overcome them.
They have rapid, efficient, context-specific, costeffective and scalable ways to find and increase access and usage of services.

HSS Health Strengthening System Project

Funded by Sightsavers and Light for the World International

This project aims at contributing to avoidable blindness prevention through health system strengthening in eye health training and practice in ECSA by addressing strategic drivers that affect eye health in the region in the East Central and Southern Africa countries.

The project seeks to sustain the solid gains made under the COECSA Strategic Plan 2012-2017 that included increasing the pool of skilled and motivated eye health workers, development and dissemination of standards of practice is eye health within the region and advocacy for eye health integration in health systems. COECSA designed this intervention in areas at strategic level will not only add value to ophthalmology but also contribute to the development of the health sector in general. The project seeks to continue and sustain the gains made in Phase I (2017-2020) through a number of critical interventions under the partnership albeit at the strategic level.

Modria Project

Funded by MUDSREH NIH grant

To use a multimodal database of clinical and retinal imaging data to develop algorithms and integrate the ophthalmic imaging function into normal clinic operations in Uganda and Kenya.

Vision 2020 LINK Partnership
[su_expand more_text=”Show more” less_text=”Show less” height=”550″ text_color=”#333333″ link_color=”#0088FF” link_align=”left”]

Since 2008, the RCOphth has been in a VISION 2020 LINK partnership with COECSA, working together towards raising standards of knowledge and practice in eye care in the region.

In 2008, the goals of the College – College LINK partnership were to enhance ophthalmology trainaing and build human resource capacity across the COECSA countries through:

  1. Developing fellowship examinations
  2. Examiner training
  3. Standardising the curriculum in training colleges ECSA
  4. Developing Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  5. Developing sub-specialty training in the region
  6. Developing mentoring

The goals of the LINK partnership are in parallel with the third Sustainable Development Goal – good health and well-being

The intention of the LINK has always been to help COECSA realize its full potential to coordinate high quality training in the region and oversee the higest standards of practice.

Since 2008, COECSA has grown and now encompasses 12 countries – Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burunfi, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zambia, Somalia and Mozambique – who have benefitted greatly from the LINK partnership

The LINK between the two colleges has evolved over the years, always responding to the needs expressed by COECSA and working together to address them. The commitment of the RCOphth over many years has been instrumental in helping to improve the quality of ophthalmology training and research in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through this LINK, more peple are being prevented from losing their sight unnecessarily. It is a true partnership that has involved many people offering what they can to the partnership.

COECSA is grateful to RCOphth and all the individuals, trusts, companies and foundations who have made charitable donations towards the LINK partnership.
